Sticking to purism on any art expression is (generally) elitism or plain shenanigans.
It is useful and necessary to know the methods and ways things are done, but sticking strictly to them seems like missing out to me.
I agree completely. Always learn the basics, it will 100% improve your art because you'll know why you're doing what you're doing. But sticking to the caveman way should just be a personal choice and not something people are shamed into. As long as I like the end result and it hasn't hurt anybody, I really could not care less how it was made.
